Self love starts with being comfortable in your own skin and doing what makes you happy as an individual. Growing up i have always been a chubby baby and i was okay with it. A few years ago i started feeling the need to shed off a few kilos not because of what people thought about my weight but because of how it made me feel. Various people have been asking "how did you do it"? and well here i am today to share my health and fitness journey.

Parkrun is an event that takes place every Saturday from 8am to 9am, in Grahamstown this event takes places at the botanical gardens and from using the Nike run app, the average distance is 5KM. The fun part about this event is that it is free of charge, you simply need to register on their website; https://www.parkrun.co.za/register/, then ensure that you print out your barcodes and take one with you to the event. Whether you choose to walk, jog or run, the onus is on you. The event has dedicated individuals who volunteer every saturday; the Tail Walker stays right at the back of the field and is the last person to cross the finish line ensuring that everyone is accounted for, so there's no need for you to worry you'll never be the last person to finish no matter how slow your pace. We also have Marshals that guide and encourage the participants around the course warning them of any obstacles or hazards. What i find inspirational about this event is the cheering and support one gets from the volunteers. I remember the very first parkrun i went to, they kept cheering "well done, you're almost there" some chantered "huhuu" and at that very moment you feel like the worlds best athlete even when you finish second last. The results of the event are often shared via email a few hours after the run.

Parkrun requires dedication, which i lacked in some instances, i would bunk some because waking up before 8am on a Saturday morning tends to be a bit of a struggle especially if you'd gone out the night before BUT THIS I'LL SAY TO YOU, GO FOR IT AND REMEMBER IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO FINISHED FIRST OR LAST BUT RATHER ITS A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING TOWARDS GOOD HEALTH.
